Introduction to Mehregan

Mehregan is one of the oldest Iranian festivals, with a history spanning several millennia. In the ancient Persian calendar, it was celebrated on the 16th day of the month of Mehr (the day of Mehr in the month of Mehr). Alongside Nowruz, Mehregan was one of the grandest national celebrations of ancient Iran.

Origin and Meaning

The word Mehregan comes from Mehr (Mithra in Avestan), meaning love, covenant, the sun, and the deity Mithra. Mithra was regarded as the guardian of light, friendship, and justice. Thus, Mehregan became a festival of gratitude to the sun, thanksgiving for nature’s blessings, and honoring justice and friendship.

Historical Significance

According to ancient texts such as Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, Mehregan commemorates the victory of King Fereydun over the tyrant Zahhak. With the support of Kaveh the Blacksmith, the people were liberated from oppression. For this reason, Mehregan symbolizes the triumph of truth over falsehood, and justice over tyranny.

Traditions and Rituals

Similar to Nowruz, a ceremonial table (sofreh) was set during Mehregan, decorated with symbolic items, including:

  • Mirror – representing light and truth
  • Sugar and sweets – symbolizing the sweetness of life
  • Pomegranate and apple – signs of fertility and abundance
  • Nuts and dried fruits – prosperity and sustenance
  • Rosewater and flowers – freshness and purity
  • Wheat and grain stalks – fertility of the land and agriculture

People wore new colorful garments, visited friends and family, and celebrated with music, storytelling, feasts, and joyful dancing.

Cultural Legacy

Mehregan is not only a seasonal festival but also a reminder of Iranian identity, unity, respect for nature, and the spirit of friendship. For thousands of years, it has been cherished by Iranians and communities of Persian descent, and today it continues to be celebrated across the world.
